Ebok Field Grows Beyond Marginal Field Status

Awarded as a marginal field to the Nigerian independent Oriental Petroleum in 2007, Ebok came with booked reserves of 25Million barrels of oil recoverable. Three years and three appraisal wells later, the accumulation, located in ExxonMobil held OML 67, in shallow offshore Nigeria, has “grown” into 116Million barrels through the drill bit, according to Afren, the technical operator.

Reservoirs encountered by Ebok 4, 5 and 6 have turned out to be generally thicker than the prognosis. In Ebok 6, the last of the three appraisal wells “the greater than expected hydrocarbon column” has led to an upgrade in the volumetrics of the D2SL reservoir to three times the predrill estimates of the recoverable reserves.

The company did not say that the well was tested. STOIIP means the entire oil in place in the “tank”, but as it is not all the oil that can be sucked out, the “recoverable” reserves are the figures used for commercial purposes.

Afren has commenced development drilling and hopes to take Ebok to first oil by end of June 2010. Peak production is expected to be 35,000BOPD.
